Planning Your Dream Kitchen

A kitchen remodel is a big project for most homeowners so it’s important to get it right! Kitchens are not only one of the most utilized rooms in a home, but they also get very high marks for return on investment. In fact, a minor kitchen remodel (approx. $20,000) recoups an average of 81.1% of costs during resale according to Zillow.com.

We’ve compiled a few tips as you get started as you plan for your kitchen remodel.

  • Take inventory of your needs and wants. Then prioritize.

Make a list of your current areas of frustration. Is there poor traffic flow or not enough cabinet storage? Do you prioritize cooking at home and need upgraded appliances? After creating a list of wants, rank them from “must have” to “wish list”.

  • Discuss the dreaded “B” word.

A budget will help you determine the scope of the project and type of materials you will use. Be sure to use your needs list to plan for costs like removing walls, moving plumbing, or additional lighting. It’s also important to consider how long you plan to stay in your home, the location, and resale potential.

  • Seek qualified contractors and vendors.

Whether you are contracting out the project, or doing some of it yourself, you will work with vendors. Seek reputable companies that are insured and experienced. Get referrals and check for online for reviews.

  • Be aware of the current construction climate.

Due to supply chain issues and raw material shortages, items may take longer to order and tradespeople may be hard to find. You also may pay more for materials than you would if you were to get contractor pricing for items like flooring, cabinets, and plumbing materials. Work with a reputable contractor to navigate the current construction climate and make your experience much more enjoyable!
