Deck Q&A + Deck Solutions Cheat Sheet

Spring is here folks — a great time to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Grilling and relaxing on the deck is a great way to spend a spring day, but if you put off deck maintenance last year, it could be a reminder of work to come.

Below are a few common questions we get from homeowners on when and how to update a deck. We’ve also created a Deck Solutions Cheat Sheet to help you compare deck materials and costs.

1.   How often do I need to re-stain my deck?

Typically, we suggest re-staining your deck every 2-3 years. If you’ve stretched this a little longer, you might want to consider a semi-solid or solid stain, which will help cover discoloration or other imperfections. For more information about deck stain and how to stain your deck, we suggest checking out Bob Vila’s recommendations.  (Always a solid expert opinion!)

2.   How long does a wood deck last?

Wood decks typically need replaced every 10-15 years, depending on the level of regular maintenance it has received.  A properly constructed deck that’s maintained and waterproofed regularly should be able to hit this mark. However, poorly constructed decks or those receiving little to no maintenance will often need replaced sooner.

3.   How do I know if my deck needs completely replaced or just repaired?

In some cases, your deck structure (beams and joists) may still be in good condition and your deck will only need a “facelift.” Be sure to have a professional determine the integrity of the structure before deciding to only replace surface boards.

4.   How much will it cost to replace my deck?

Costs will vary depending on the size and type of material you choose as well as your preferred style of deck railing. See our Deck Solutions Cheat Sheet for a general idea of cost and material comparisons.
